2017-Antarctica
Photos from the family trip to Antarctica in 2017. We went with One Ocean Expeditions aboard the Akademik Ioffe.
We departed Ushuaia on December 18, 2017. For the next two days, we crossed the Drake's passage. It was quite choppy and foggy. Due to the low fog and poor light, we missed most of the expected birds. The only bir that followed us was the Cape Petrel and I got a few photos.
On the December 20, 2017, we first saw land after being on the Drake's passage for a few days. The ship navigated the channel between the Anvers Island and Brabant Island in Antarctica. It was a joy to be able to see land after a few days of choppy waters and fog.
On December 21, initially the weather was really bad with winds of 40 - 60 knots. Initially we were told that the AM outing was likely cancelled, but then we found that the Selvick cove in Orne Harbor would be a good landing spot. This was our first landing in snowing conditions. It was a great thrill to see our first penguins - the Gentoo and the Chinstraps.
